    DAYTIME MEETING 11 am
We're hard of hearing? When did that happen? Now what?

Hearing loss exposes us to new, unwanted emotions. HLAA members Jessie Lazeroff and Fred Altrieth ponder their reactions to their respective issues with hearing loss.

Jessie has an extensive resume of participation in politics, business, and civic organizations. Unexpectedly she abruptly lost all the hearing in one ear. The emotional impact was traumatic. She explores the reactions of her husband and friends as well. Over time Jessie has learned to live with one-sided hearing but still encounters frustration.

Fred was a salesman for General Electric House wares and Audio Division when his hearing began to fail. A member of Rochester chapter for 25 years, he’s been involved with the technology committee for most of them. After years of declining hearing, exploiting loops and microphones to maximize his hearing aids, Fred obtained a cochlear implant.

    (This program is Audiolooped.)

    EVENING MEETING 7 pm
Hearing Accessibility in Houses of Worship

Incline your ear, and come unto me; hear, and your soul shall live…
    Isaiah 55:3

Seek spiritual comfort if you have a hearing loss, and too often you won’t understand the sermon in an inaccessible church or temple.

A quartet of panelists relates its members’ experiences in making their houses of worship friendlier for hearing disabled worshipers.

° Deacon Gene Edwards of St. Rose Church in Lima is a retired professor of communications at Monroe Community College. He chaired the committee which designed and installed an inductive loop at St. Rose.

° Rabbi Sandra Katz is a board-certified chaplain at the Jewish Home of Rochester. Originally from Tulsa, she came here in June 2007 to serve Jewish Senior Life.

° Suzanne Johnson has been the Rochester Missioner for the Deaf since 2006 via the National Episcopal Conference of the Deaf. She is affiliated with St. Mark’s and St. John’s Episcopal Church and Ephphatha Mission of the Deaf. She assisted with the advocacy and fundraising for the current FM system at St. Mark’s and St. John’s, in place since 2004.

° The Rev. Frederic W. Reynolds is Rector of our host venue, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, the first Rochester-area church to install an inductive loop.
