    September 14, 2010 - Daytime meeting 11am and Evening meeting 7 pm
    HLAA Milwaukee convention wrapup...

    Inspiring is the word!

Be inspired as you hear HLAA/Rochester members report on their impressions of the annual Hearing Loss Association of America convention held June 17-20 in Milwaukee.

The chapter meetings on Tuesday, September 14 at 11am and 7 pm feature reprises of what people saw, attended, and participated in at the convention.

    Presenters are: Kelly Barrett
    Laura Chaba
    Peter Fackler
    Barbara Gates
    Ginger Graham
    Jeannette Kanter
    Barbara Law
    Sue Miller
    Mary Ellen Tait

The host venue was Hilton Milwaukee City Center Hotel, connected to the Convention Center with a skyway (like in Rochester.) Supposedly less walking was involved than in Nashville. This year HLAA emphasized “young adults” with hearing loss, and these folks have posted blogs which can be read on the HLAA.org site.

Each conference goer saw and participated in their own individual activities, thus no two reports are identical. In an unusual format, presenters will use three words to describe their opinion of the convention; review the most important thing they learned and how they learned it; and describe the most memorable event experienced there and why it impressed them.

About forty workshops on five tracks encompassed advocacy and access, hearing technology, medical issues, relationships and communication, and young adults. Topics included “How to pay for hearing aids,” Movie captioning,” and “Hearing loss or dementia?” Additionally, participants viewed the most comprehensive exhibits around on products for hearing loss, attended receptions and socials, and met other HLAA members from all over the country who understood their hearing disability.

“Oktoberfest,” drawing on the city’s German heritage, was the theme of the banquet, complete with polka music. Those interested in motorcycles could attend a tour of the Harley Davidson Museum.

HLAA-Rochester chapter meetings are held in the vestry room at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, East Ave. at Westminster Road, across from George Eastman House. Enter through rear door.

All programs are Audiolooped. Those needing a sign language interpreter should contact Linda Siple at 585 475 6712.
