The Rochester Chapter Walk4Hearing has been an outstanding success, thanks to
the hard of work of many people and the generosity of hundreds more. We raised
over
$30,000.
It was led by an outstanding Steering Committee: they offered their homes,
their culinary skills, and their talents in marketing and publicity. They
telephoned; they wrote; they delivered endless
folders with information about the Hearing Loss Association, They entertained;
they used their considerable persuasive powers; and they worked tirelessly
to make the May 7, 2006 Walk4Hearing the event that it became.
The monies we raised are being used to establish a fund to provide scholarships for hard of hearing students who are
continuing their higher education or further technical training. This year we are pleased to have four scholarship
recipients, who will receive $1000 each for their continuing education.
Our four scholarship winners this year are: Alexandra Boland, Ashley Owens, Charles Sarratori and Lyndsey Willison.
All have a hearing loss.
This is what Lyndsey had to say:
“I feel my hearing loss has not affected my achievement or participation. It has only pushed me to do better in
school……I’ve learned to overcome my hearing loss and not see it as a burden or use it as crutch.”
Lyndsey will be attending St. John Fisher College. Her career goal is to become a pharmacist.
Alexandra Boland said, “My hearing loss has not prevented me from becoming the woman I want to be……..I believe that believing
in yourself and maintaining a positive attitude is the key to overcoming any disability, mental or physical.”
Alexandra will be majoring in Psychology in college.
Charles Sarratori said, “My hearing loss has never really had much negative effect on my life. Occasionally I have
to make adjustments but my hearing loss has never stopped me from doing anything. I am not embarrassed to tell people
I have a hearing loss and to ask for help when I need it.”
Charles Sarratori wants to study building construction and become a contractor.
Ashley Owens said, “My achievements at school, work and in the community with my hearing loss has been positively
affected by having a cochlear implant and sign language skills. I plan to major in science and become a science teacher.”
Ashley will attend RIT/NTID.
These articulate, gifted young people are an inspiration to all of us and we are proud of the opportunity
to contribute to their further education.
